In spite of the fact that I’ve never really gotten a good gift in return, this will mark the 5th time I’ve signed up for Reddit Secret Santa.
I think that people have various reasons for being involved. For me, it’s a mix of two things:
- I was part of the early part of the internet/USEnet, and we used to do things like trading tapes, sending each other comics, etc. It was a time when file sharing wasn’t nearly as possible as it is now, so we exchanged physical things. There’s a whimsy in doing that again.
- I like trying to pick a great gift for someone.
It’s also nice to get a mysterious gift, but I usually don’t expect to get anything all that cool. The odds are against getting a great Santa match.
This year, I drew someone who is into sci-fi, chocolate, coffee and Blizzard games.
Not a bad match for me. I should be able to nail this one.
Last year, I had a chance to expose someone interested in graphic novels to Batman The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. The year before I started someone’s D&D adventures with a care package of 5e stuff and some cool dice. It’s a fun thing to do.
I wonder how the exchange will go this year. In previous years it has grown each time, but we’re approaching an era where I’m not sure how many people are in the mood to give. I feel the oddly combative vibe of the country leaking into education, into the fan communities I’m a part of, etc. I wonder if it will hit the Reddit Santa experience.
I wish, as we move into December, peace and love to everyone. Like… seriously. I hope you can have a peaceful holiday season and can recharge from what has been a trying year. I want us all to feel better. We deserve it.
