Day 181: A year ago today

I’m sure everyone has heard of the American dream. No, not Dusty Rhodes, the “own a home, two car garage, picket fence” one.

I always sort of assumed that would be one of the many things I’d never achieve. But a year ago today, Julie and I (and my mom and our small cadre of doggos) moved into our house. It wasn’t our literal move-in, as it was just the start of a whole bunch of moving trucks and then packing my place in Oxford that my suddenly-super-rude landlord forced me to move out of in less than a week. But a year ago today I walked into our house for the first time after officially closing, and I placed the first of my belongings here, a Dr. Strange SDCC Funko Pop that I bought at the GameStop in Richmond (also my first purchase from my new neighborhood game store).

On this, the anniversary of doing something I never thought we’d be able to do, I add to the shelf with Dr. Strange (since it was “strange” that this worked out) a Tony Stark SDCC exclusive Pop from the same store, because Tony Stark, at least to me, indicates living the dream.

I wonder if this time next year there will still be an American Dream, or if living in a land where our President just asked if he could pardon himself means the dream is dying(isn’t that an admission of guilt, btw? Rhetorically speaking, innocent people don’t need to be pardoned unless they were wrongfully convicted. There’s a guy named Peltier that should be ahead of your name on the list, Mr. President). But next year, we add another Pop to the shelf. Tradition is tradition.
